10bit Displays

Requirements

  • A display that is capable of outputting 10bit.

  • A machine capable of outputting 10bit (vx range, gx 3, gx 2c, EX 3)

Workflow

  1. Bit depth can be set globally for the whole project in the Feed View > Global Settings > Project Bit Depth. The options are 8 or 10 bit.
  2. Bit depth can be set per machine, independent of the project bit depth in the machine editor widget.
    • Right-click on the machine and navigate to the Display Management separator.
    • Select from Use Project Bit Depth, 8 bit and 10 bit.
  3. Click Apply Feed settings after changing bit depth.

HDR

In order to enable HDR within Disguise, follow these steps:

  1. DO NOT set HDR in Windows or on the graphics card; this is not necessary.
  2. Set and apply 10-bit bit depth as described in the section above.
  3. Set the colour management to Gamma or ACES.
  4. Apply output transform or colour profile according to the display requirements.

10bit Test Pattern

The test pattern we use is a greyscale consisting of multiple rows, each with a gradient of greyscale blocks that represent different steps between black and white. Each row is designed to contain more steps than the last, corresponding to higher bit depths. The 8th row has 256 steps, while the 10th row represents 10 bit with 1024 steps. If your media server and output devices are set up correctly to handle 10bit, you will be able to distinguish between each of the steps in the 10 bit row. The 8th row will therefore be visually distinct from the rows above it.

Note, ensure you are applying the 10bit test pattern without scaling. Scaling could squash the graduated steps making it difficult to see the difference in rows.

Known Issues

  • DVI VFC cards cannot run 10bit content or input and so will not function when 10bit mode is enabled.

  • When using 4K 50hz/60hz with HDMI 2.0, the HDMI available bandwidth means you need to make use of 4:2:2 chroma subsampling. Currently Designer only creates 4:4:4 EDIDs when applying feed settings, so this setting will need to be set in the GPU control panel.

  • Depending on what the display device is, it may need to be in a specific mode to enable 10bit. This could be known as high performance, high colour mode or true colour mode. Refer to the manufacturer specifications on how to enable the 10bitmode for your display of choice.
