Output Video-Embedded Audio

Disguise can play back a quantised audio file attached to the Track to a single audio device. However, for more flexible control of volume, timing, and output routing, it is recommended to use an Audio layer.

Playing back video-embedded audio

By default, audio embedded in video files is only played back when the video layer is mapped to an active screen on a given machine. If you wish to play back audio regardless of mapping settings, either render a separate audio file and use the Audio Layer, or following the steps in the section below.

  1. Copy the video file with the embedded audio to the VideoFile folder in the specific Project folder. See the Placing media files for a project topic to understand where to copy a video file.
  2. Create a Video layer.
  3. Select the video file containing the audio and drop it onto the Video keyframe editor.
  4. Select the audio output or outputs (as of r17.4, Disguise supports multi-channel audio from video files) and ensure the audio outputs are patched in the Audio Output Patch Manager.

Playing back video-embedded audio without a mapping

  1. Content can be mapped to screen with a special “Audio dummy screen” mapping, which causes the video’s audio content to be permanently output. As this is a “dummy screen”, it is recommended that you render it as a 16x16 black video. This would likely be most useful only if audio embedded in content, or use of a dedicated audio track with the Audio layer, is not an option.
  2. Create a new screen and rename it to Audio dummy screen.
  3. Set the resolution of the screen to 16x16px and set the offset values so it’s positioned far away from the other video screens in the Stage. This screen will only be used for audio output and has therefore no visual function.
  4. Select the mapping type used for the Audio dummy screen for the Video layer. This will direct the Video layers output to the Audio dummy screen screen.
  5. In the Output Feed level, add a Feed rectangle to the Audio dummy screen screen. This will copy the Audio dummy screen screens content from the Stage level to a Feed scene in the Feed level.

Hit Enter or select the Play button to output the audio to a PA.
