Redisguise Advice
Redisguise is the process of updating and restoring the operating system on a server using a bootable USB drive.
The following advice will help resolve common issues with the process:
-
Performing a system restore from the new disk image will erase any valuable data on your system drive. Please ensure you make a backup of any essential files from your system (C:) drive before initialising this process. The process does NOT destroy any media or projects on your media drive.
-
It’s critically important to use the correct USB Redisguise settings. The re-image process will fail if they are not set correctly.
-
Some very old OS versions consisted of 3 parts due to the way the data was compressed. Where this is the case, place all 3 parts in the same directory and then use 7-Zip to extract the first part. 7-Zip will automatically continue to extract the other 2 parts to create the full ISO image.
-
Please do not select ‘Save Changes’ in the BIOS. You only need to access the ‘BootOverride’ Section.
-
During the Redisguise process, servers may appear to get stuck indefinitely at 0% completion. This is typically due to a misconfiguration of the USB drive in Rufus. If this happens, review and repeat the steps shown in the ‘Create a Bootable USB’ paragraph for your specific server model (see Redisguise Overview).
-
On the latest versions of Rufus you may see the warning below. This is expected and does not apply to current Disguise hardware. Please click OK to continue as normal.
-
We have provided a table below to illustrate which servers require specific USB ports for the Redisguise process.
Server | Re-imaging USB Port | Port colour |
---|---|---|
Use the rear ports only | ||
4x2pro, 4x4pro | Use the rear (USB 2.0) ports only | USB 2.0 rear ports are White USB 3.0 front & rear ports are Blue |
